Benz portrays Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic mayor of a bustling mining boomtown, one of the world’s few oases of civility and inclusion. As the newly appointed mayor, she is determined to maintain peace in the community, an ambitious task in this deadly new world.
Leonidas plays Irisa, an exotically beautiful warrior who is part of an alien race called the Irathients. After Nolan (Bowler) killed her criminal father, he adopted the girl and raised her as his clever – and lethal – right-hand.
Curran will portray Datak Tarr, part of an elite alien race known as the Castithans. Datak grew up in the slums of his home planet, but despite being part of the under-privileged class, he schemed his way onto one of the alien arks, saving himself before his home planet was destroyed.
Murray potrays Datak’s beautiful and proper wife, Stahma, a high-ranking Castithan before her home planet ceased to exist. Clever, imaginative and darkly opportunistic, Stahma is perhaps more dangerous than her husband.

Syfy’s Defiance will allow for some inter-dependence between the game and the series, though the game itself will be made to endure as a stand-alone offering.
What makes this series so distinctive is that the audience can actually be part of the series through its sister MMO game. Events in the show will effect what will be happening in the MMO game and vice versa. The TV series will be able to reference actions that have occurred online and even mention the avatars of the players who have achieved certain game goals (good or bad). In addition, characters in the show may appear in the game you are playing to give you a specific quest or mission which will be referenced in the next episode.

Back in 2007, Julie Benz and Jamie Murray appeared together on the second season of Showtime’s “Dexter.” And now they’re back together again at Syfy.
Deadline is reporting that Benz and Murray are both among the newest cast members of “Defiance,” an upcoming drama series written and executive produced by “Farscape” creator, Rockne S. O’Bannon. Developed concurrently with the “Defiance” video game, the TV series takes place in a future where humans and aliens live side-by-side on Earth after decades of war and alien terra-forming have drastically changed the planet.

Last month TVWise broke an in depth report on Syfy’s upcoming series Defiance. At the time we also revealed profiles of several of the major characters. We can now reveal that Jamie Murray, Julie Benz, Stepahnie Leonidas and Tony Curran have joined the cast of the series, with all four of them assuming roles that we initially told you about last month.
Penned by Farscape creator Rockne S O’Bannon, Defiance is Set in the near future and introduces a world where humans and aliens must learn to live together on an exotic new Earth that has been transformed by alien terra-forming machines. Bowler plays Jeb Nolan, the law keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Nolan is a former Marine who fought in the alien conflict and suffered the loss of his wife and child in the war. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world, bringing him to the town where his peacekeeping skills make him a valuable addition this new community. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe, evolving together over time to tell an overall story that is more powerful together. Jamie Murray has been cast in the role of Stahma, Datak’s faithful wife (one of two roles Gillian Anderson was initially considered for). This role was described as being very Lady Macbeth. Stahma is not satisfied with Datak’s station in Defiance and feels he (and by extension, she) should have more power. She comes from old money and is very cunning and arrogant, with a sense of entitlement.

Syfy’s newest original television series, Defiance, looks like it will be getting 13 episodes in its first season and is slated to air sometime late 2012 or early 2013. Production on the new series begins April of 2012 in Toronto.
Defiance opens up with a flashback scene, set in the present day, which is narrated by main character Jeb Nolan. Through the on-screen scenes and the narration the audience will learn exactly what happened to Earth. In the present (presumably 2012 or 2013), alien ships enter Earth’s atmosphere, these aliens (who prefer to be called Votans rather than aliens) are fleeing their own solar system which has been destroyed and have come to earth seeking a new home. Shortly after their arrival negotiations begin between the aliens and the government(s) of Earth. After six years of negotiation, no agreement has been reached and a war begins between the two sides. By this time, Jeb Nolan (now sixteen years old) has enlisted in the military to fight for his people against these invading aliens.

Exclusive: Last June, Syfy and Trion Games announced Defiance, a joint MMO video game and TV series. At the time little was released about the proposed TV tie-in other than the fact that it was being penned by Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape) and being produced by Universal Cable Productions. This was not the first time Syfy had teamed up with a video games studio to create a TV tie-in, they did something similar with THQ last year for Red Faction. When Defiance was initially announced,it was unclear whether this was a pilot or a full on series, however, more details were released a few weeks ago when Syfy announced that Grant Bowler had been cast as Jeb Nolan in the series.
Syfy’s press release announcing the casting stated: “Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a world where humans and aliens must learn to live together on an exotic new Earth that has been transformed by alien terra-forming machines. Bowler plays Jeb Nolan, the law keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world, bringing him to the town where his peacekeeping skills make him a valuable addition this new community. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe, evolving together over time to tell an overall story that is more powerful together.”
